Manage how you spend time on your Android phone with Digital Wellbeing (2024)

On some phones you can get information about how you spend time on your phone, such as how often you unlock it and how long you use each app. You can use this information to improve your digital well-being. For example, you can set app timers and schedule display changes.

Important:

  • Some of these steps only work on Android 10 and later.Learn how to check your Android version.
  • Some of these steps require you to touch the screen.

Configure Digital Wellbeing

To find Digital Wellbeing as an app, open it in the Settings app and tapDigital wellbeing and parental controlsand then switch onShow icon in the app list.

The first time you access Digital Wellbeing, you will need to create your profile.

  1. Open your device's Settings app.
  2. PressDigital wellbeing and parental controls.
  3. Tap MoreManage how you spend time on your Android phone with Digital Wellbeing (1)Manage how you spend time on your Android phone with Digital Wellbeing (2)Manage your data.

Tip:You can also manage a child's account if you are the default parent account on the device.Learn more about Family Link.

Add the Screen Time widget

Use the Screen Time widget to find the top 3 apps you use every day.

On Android 9 and newer devices:

  1. Press and hold on the home screen.
  2. Tap WidgetsManage how you spend time on your Android phone with Digital Wellbeing (3).
  3. Tap and hold the Screen Time widget. You get photos of your home screens.
  4. Drag the widget to the desired location and lift your finger.

Manage your time in apps

Find out how much time you spend in apps

  1. Open your device's Settings app.
  2. PressDigital wellbeing and parental controls.
  3. The chart shows your device usage today. Click on the diagram for more information. For example:
    • Screen time:Which apps you have had on the screen and for how long
    • Opening hours:How often you unlocked your device and opened certain apps
    • Notifications received:How many notifications you have received and from which apps
  4. Tap an app in the list to get more information or change app settings.

Limit how much time you spend in an app each day

Important:Some work and school accounts may not work with app timers.

  1. Open your device's Settings app.
  2. PressDigital wellbeing and parental controls.
  3. Tap on the diagram.
  4. Tap Set timer next to the app you want to restrictManage how you spend time on your Android phone with Digital Wellbeing (4).
  5. Choose how much time you can spend in that app. Then tapOkay.

Tip:If you run out of time, the app will close and the icon will dim. To remind:

  • App timers reset at midnight.
  • To use the app again before midnight, follow steps 1-4 above and delete the app timer.

Manage your time on Google Chrome

Find out how much time you spend on websites

  1. Open your device's Settings app.
  2. PressDigital wellbeing and parental controls.

    • If you can't find it right away, tapScrew all apps.
  4. Scroll a bitchView websitesManage how you spend time on your Android phone with Digital Wellbeing (7)Show. You can see which websites you have visited and how much time you spend on them every day.
  5. To get more information about the time you spent on a website, tap it.

Hide previous website visits

To stop showing previous visits to a website, tap the website in the list. PressDelete previous visitsManage how you spend time on your Android phone with Digital Wellbeing (8)To delete. If you go to the page in the future, it will appear again in the list.

Limit how much time you spend on a website each day

  1. Open your device's Settings app.
  2. PressDigital wellbeing and parental controls.
  3. Tap on the diagramManage how you spend time on your Android phone with Digital Wellbeing (9)ChromeManage how you spend time on your Android phone with Digital Wellbeing (10).
    • If you can't find it right away, tapScrew all apps.
  4. Tap Set Website Hours next to the website you want to restrictManage how you spend time on your Android phone with Digital Wellbeing (11).
  5. Select a time limit and then tapOkay.

Sleep better with Bedtime Mode

How to set a bedtime routine

  1. Open your device's Settings app.
  2. PressDigital wellbeing and parental controls Manage how you spend time on your Android phone with Digital Wellbeing (12) Bedtime mode Manage how you spend time on your Android phone with Digital Wellbeing (13) Bedtime routine.
  3. Choose whenBedtime modewill enable.
  4. Create a bedtime routine in two ways:
    • Use a schedule:Set start and end times for your sleep and your favorite days of the week.
    • Turn on while charging:Set the 'After' and 'Before' times and charge your device during that time frame.

Customize your settings with Bedtime Mode

  • Do not disturb during bedtime: Learn how to avoid interruptions.
  • Disable bedtime at the following alarm:Disables Bedtime mode at your next alarm. If no alarm is set, Bedtime Mode will turn off at the scheduled time or when you stop charging your device, depending on your routine.

You can customize yours tooBedtime screen options:

  • Grayscale:Changes your screen to black and white.
  • Keep the screen dark:Turns off the always-on screen when it's time for bed.
  • Dim the wallpaper:Dims your wallpaper and lock screen when it's time for bed.
  • Dark theme:Make your screen background black when it's time for bed. If you select this option, Dark Theme will only be used when Bedtime Mode is enabled.

Tip:Use quick settings to quickly turn Bedtime mode on and off.Learn how to quickly change general settings.

Pause distracting apps

  1. Open your device's Settings app.
  2. PressDigital wellbeing and parental controls Manage how you spend time on your Android phone with Digital Wellbeing (14) Focus modus.
  3. Choose which apps you want to pause. When focus mode is enabled, you will not be able to use these apps or receive notifications from them.
  4. Use focus mode if you want to avoid distractions.
    • Press to turn focus mode on or offNow turn onofNow switch off.
    • Press to activate the focus mode automatically+Set a schedule.
    • Tap to temporarily resume apps when focus mode is onTake a breakand select a time limit.

Tip:Some devices allow you to add focus mode to your quick settings.Learn more about quick settings.
