Dear MacBook Owner,

You are receiving this email because you have already contacted our company regarding your MacBook laptop. On November 28, 2022, the Court granted preliminary approval of a $50 million nationwide settlement that would benefit MacBook buyers who had their "Butterfly" keyboard repaired. More information about the agreement, eligibility, approval process and your options can be found atwww.KeyboardSettlement.com.

MacBook Pro owners who have had at least two Apple top case replacements within four years of purchase are considered members of the Group 1 settlement class and will receive an automatic payment as well as a settlement email.

MacBook Pro owners who have had a single upper case replacement will need tosubmit a claim formfor compensation and are considered Group 2 Settlement Class Members. Those who have had a keycap replaced can also submit a claim form for a small settlement as part of the third group of Settlement Class Members.

Monetary prizes will be based on the number of repairs required, with amounts up to $395 provided for those who have had two or more upper cabinet replacements. Mac owners who fall into this category will receive their class notices this month. Claims will be accepted until March 6, 2023, and a final approval hearing will be held on March 16, 2023.

the demanddates back to 2018, when a group of customers sued Apple over the butterfly keyboard, claiming the company hid the failure from consumers to keep selling Macs.

Butterfly keyboards were used on Macs between 2015 and 2019, and while Apple has repeated the design several times to try and improve durability, a design flaw has made the butterfly mechanism prone to failure. Over those four years, thousands of customers have experienced issues with repeated keystrokes, stuck keys, and complete keyboard failures.

Apple has released a keyboard repair programin june 2018, which covers MacBook, MacBook Pro andMacBook Airmodels for four years after purchase. Apple was just replacing butterfly keyboards with another butterfly keyboard, so there was no real solution.

Apple eventually scrapped the butterfly mechanism and went back to a scissor switch mechanism, and today all Macs use a scissor switch keyboard which is much more durable and able to withstand small crumbs and dust.

It's a shame this doesn't benefit anyone outside the US. We also suffered from the butterfly keyboard in the UK - had to take Apple to small claims court here after a very long and protracted painful support experience - Kafkaesque hell.

I also remember the usual Apple cultists here dismissing problem reports, denying that there is a problem.

I am now using MBP 2021, but the keys are not as good as the classic 2015 ones, but at least they work.

In Australia, under our Consumer Laws, you get back the full purchase price within, say, 2-3 years for a "major fault" of an item as expensive as a MacBook Pro. In the US, greedy lawyers carry most of what the consumer is owed.

I don't want to blame the victim or anything, but if you bought anything other than the 2016 MacBook before this keyboard became a known issue, I feel like it's up to you at the moment.

I avoided these models entirely due to the keyboard and touch bar and opted for a ThinkPad instead. I recently repurchased a MacBook (first in 7 years) getting the 16” Pro in large part because they finally ditched the butterfly keyboard.

Unless one is a die-hard Apple nerd, the chances of someone knowing in advance about an issue prior to purchase would be slim to none.
