A cable connection is preferred.
A Time Machine is a viable copy of your user and all data - if you can use the cable connection due to lack of port compatibility from old to new. This is the same as connecting Mac to Mac to move your content.
When I bought a new machine from Apple online, they advised meUSB-C naar USB-adapter - Apple
That's the most basic way to connect a USB to your new Thunderbolt port.
