How do I remove a device from my Apple account?

You can remove an iPad, iPhone or even your Mac from your Apple account from your other Apple devices. Make sure you're signed in to your Apple account on the device you want to use; otherwise it won't know which devices to look for.

The option to remove a device from your Apple account won't appear if you're signed into your Apple account while using that device to try to remove it (example: use your iPad Air to remove yourself).

Follow these steps from your iPhone or iPad:

  1. Open that of your deviceInstitutions.

  2. In the Settings menu, tap yourApple-idat the top of the screen. This should include your name and the image you chose to represent your account.

  3. Scroll to the bottom of the menu and you'll see a list of the different devices connected to your Apple ID.

  6. A pop-up will appear telling you that if you remove the device from your account, it will no longer be able to use iCloud or other Apple services until you sign in again.

  8. Depending on the device being removed, you may see another pop-up asking you to contact your carrier to disable your SIM card. PressOkay.

  9. Although this process removes the device from your Apple account, your login information is still stored on the device and you may be asked to sign in again. To completely remove the device from your account, you will need to manually log out of your Apple account on the device you removed.

  10. To sign out of your Apple account on the device, go to your Apple ID menu, scroll down and taplog out.

  11. Enter your Apple ID password, then tapTo swallowto confirm.

  12. After you sign out of your Apple account and remove your device, you can sign back in if necessary. Or someone else can enter their Apple ID to link the device to their account.

Removing a device from your Apple account and signing out will not delete all of your data or information. If you plan to sell your device, make sure you have arestore to factory settings.

How do I unlink an iPhone from an Apple ID?

Unlinking an iPhone from your Apple ID follows the same steps as above. You can also unlink your iPhone (or other Apple device) from your Apple ID using your Mac.

What does removing a device from Apple ID do?

If you remove a device from your Apple ID, that device will no longer be able to perform all the functions associated with your Apple account. Once removed, the device will no longer be able to receive notifications or messages sent to your Apple account, accept two-factor authentication codes, connect to iCloud, make App Store purchases, sync with other devices, or create backups on its own.

You may also need to remove a device from your Apple ID if you reach your Apple IDdevice association limit(10 devices/5 computers) and you want to add one more. In such a scenario, you can delete an old device to make room for the new one.

Why can't I remove a device from my Apple ID?

If you can't remove a device from your Apple ID (because the option is grayed out or the option doesn't appear at all), you may need to sign out of your Apple ID on that device first.
