How to get rid of chicken mites and lice - naturally - backyard poultry (11)

Reading time: 3 minutes

Chicken mites and lice are among the worst pests you will ever come into contact with while keeping poultry. For years people told me there was no natural way to prevent or treat thischicken mites and lice, but as a herbalist, I knew this simply wasn't true. I have put together a proven natural treatment that I have been using for years to get rid of chicken mites and lice. With just a few simple ingredients, you can prevent these creepy crawlies from happening. Or you can treat an attack within a few weeks.

Mintreatment of chicken mitesSpray also works well against lice. But there are a few important things you should do as soon as you notice an outbreak of mites or lice. The key to controlling external chicken parasites is consistency. If you do not remain diligent in treating the chickens, the parasites will eventually take over.

Here are some things you can do when you see the first signs of lice:

  1. Clean the chickens thoroughly and then spray every part of the coop with the chicken mite spray. You may need to make a few bottles for this process.
  2. Pour cooled wood ash directly onto the skin of each chicken to help kill any mites or lice.If you can't do this, you can add wood ash to their dust bath area. Once you have removed the mites and lice, now treat any scavengers and their eggs. Diatomaceous earth (food grade) also works. Either way, wear a mask if you're concerned about dust particles getting into your lungs.
  3. That evening, the chicken mite spray is sprayed directly onto the chicken's skin.Concentrate on the neck, under the wings and the ventilation area (again directly on the skin). The spray will deter and also kill the mites. It is best to hose down the chicken coops as well.
  4. Spray your chickens daily for at least two weeks. After two weeks you can spray them every other day for at least three weeks. Continue adding wood ash to their bathing area as needed. After six full weeks of treatment you should be mite free!
  5. I tend to leave bedding out of the garden for at least the first month if possible,So no mites live in the litter until the chickens have been effectively treated. There is nothing worse than removing mites from your chickens and then discovering that they are living in your chickenshutch bedding! Make sure you also hose down the living rooms every day.

CHICKEN MITE TREATMENT SPRAY
  • 25 cloves garlic, peeled and crushed (or 1 ozknoflook-extract)
  • 45 drops of eucalyptus essential oil
  • 30 drops of lavender essential oil
  • 30 drops of peppermint essential oil
  • 20 drops of cinnamon bark essential oil
  • 2 tablespoons white vinegar or witch hazel (unless using garlic extract)
  • Water

Ofessential oilsare really optional, but they maximize the effectiveness of this spray.

Method:

  1. In a 16oz. glass spray bottle, combine garlic (or extract) and essential oils. If you use crushed garlic, let it sit for several hours before using.
  2. If you use garlic extract, do not use white vinegar. Fill the rest of the bottle ¾ full with water. If you use crushed garlic, add vinegar.
  3. Shake the bottle well before each spray. Spray directly onto the chicken's skin, concentrating only on the neck, ventilation area and top of the tail, where the oil gland is located. I also spray their feet and the bottom of the rest bar so that the mixture ends up on their bellies when they lie down on their feet and rest. Perform this treatment at night after they have settled down.
  4. Continue this treatment for two weeks, then twice a week for two weeks, to rid your chickens of mites. You can dust your chickens with wood ash once a week, but this may not be necessary.

This spray has worked wonders for many people, including myself. There's a reason it's one of the most popular sprays when it comes to chickens. It's easy to make, versatile and effective at controlling chicken mites and lice!

  1. Oh! Thank you. The internet is difficult to navigate, I ask the HOLY SPIRIT to guide and guide me and I found your site. It's perfect, I have most of the oils myself and all the garlic. Score! Mix and use tomorrow. Thanks again! I have a question about a sick chicken... 1 chicken of 2 weeks has loose stools and a swollen stomach, feels like a water balloon. How can I help it?

    1. All good, sound advice has been given, all but one: Bread, my friend of a feather. Bread is the easiest source of calcium and your egg production, along with the extremely strong shells, will increase if you feed them daily! No joke, man in moderation of course, but I absolutely saw this happen to seven of us when we switched to bread as our main source of calcium, they still got other nutrients but none of it had the results that bread has after You feed it day after day and there are many cheap bread shops and you can also freeze it until you use it!! Plus we all know they love bread LOL

      Answer

  2. The yolks of the adult chickens will mature them without any hard food and you can also grind the shell into a fine powder for the best calcium they can have, which also makes the eggs strong. is a cure for everything

  3. Hello, I'm new. I'm reading your recipe for the mite spray. Do you mean you mix all these oils together, including the garlic essential oil, and then add water? Is it right? Are these oils suitable for food? I don't know much about oils. Can you add apple cider to the water?

  4. HALLO
Who wants to run around trying to catch a bunch of flying chicks that definitely won't get caught????
All of these concoctions to help get rid of chicken mites and lice require you to hold a nervous, screaming chicken to apply these sprays. Several times these bottles of chicken insecticide state how highly toxic they are and DO NOT GET ANYTHING ON YOU!!!! .
So while you're wearing a full hazmat outfit in a temperature of 110 degrees and humidity so thick you can't breathe. How on earth can this process benefit my flock of 18 birds?
I know...I know, catch them at night if ever there was a night in the garden.
    NOT REALLY!!!!
In the evening I go to check my herd. Make sure everything is in the basket and that the front door is properly closed. That is it !!! I just want to go back home and end it all. Not chasing chickens all night and trying to spray them with highly toxic chemicals that could kill me before mites and lice...
There must be an answer to the treatment of our birds, without trying to catch them and stop them. There aren't such friendly chickens after all.

  5. Breathe, dude, breathe. It doesn't matter what their attitude is, what matters is their attitude in the dark. Birds in general, regardless of species, are very different when asleep than when awake. Absolute! (The main reason you MUST have a chicken coop in my opinion. Keep them safe while they do their weird sleep zombie sh*t, it's kind of a game actually) . Equipped with a hands-free red light on my head, I can easily move from bird to bird by simply spraying the areas mentioned above. If you're concerned about them screaming, you can hold a small pillowcase or sheet in one hand and firmly but gently grab them by the head, keeping their beak closed as you grasp their body. It doesn't matter if they cry a little, because surprisingly the chickens don't run, even though they sleep, the partner is devoured next to them, it's as if they turn into complete steaks overnight! In daylight they would NOT stand idly by, they would run or fight! Remember how they put the mask over a Hawke's head? It is to keep them calm and quiet during the journey or journey or before the hunt. However, there may be something easier for you, such as a handheld vacuum cleaner and of course a dust bin with the mentioned materials needed to turn off the lights...

  6. My experience is closer to Chuck's than to the zombie chickens described by Myssi. When I walk through the garden at night, they alert and move. Are they easier to catch? Yes. But easy to catch? No.
Direct application is almost impossible on 4 of my 7. The other three are only slightly better. I have had to resort to treating whatever they are going through with edibles (regularly garlic and oregano) and things I can do for their environment like dusting and spraying. It is also a practice of acceptance. I'm trying my best.

    Answer

  7. I have discovered a very simple way to get mites and lice to leave your chickens alone. Add 1 tablespoon of sulfur flowers to their mash per 12 birds, and in a few days they will be completely free of insects. There is no egg retention and it won't make your eggs taste funny.
I recommend a thorough treatment of their coop to prevent reinfestation.
