Do you want to know which accounts on your computer have administrative rights? Whether you want to find out if your user account is an administrator or simply change the administrator, you can easily do this on your Windows PC or Mac. If you have a Chromebook, you can easily find the owner of your laptop, but you won't be able to change it without a factory reset. This wikiHow teaches you how to determine whether or not you're using an administrator account on your computer, and how to give another account administrative privileges.
Things you need to know
- You must be an administrator on your PC or Mac to change the administrator.
- To see if your account is an administrator on Windows, open your Settings and select Accounts.
- To see if you're an administrator on a Mac, click the Apple menu, go to System Preferences and choose Users & Groups.

Look for "Administrator" under your name at the top of the page.At the top of the page you will see your name (or the name of the account you are currently using). If you are using an administrator account, you will see the word"Administrator"just below the user information.
- You can repeat this process with other accounts on your PC to determine which one is the administrator.

Change the administrator account.If you want to grant administrator rights to another user or reset an administrator account to a standard account, you can easily do so:
- ClickFamilyat the bottom of the Accounts page. You can see it under 'Account Settings'.
- ClickChange account typenext to the user you want to make an administrator.
- If you don't see the user you want to make an administrator, add them. Clickadd Accountand follow the on-screen instructions.[1]
- to electAdministratorto create an account administrator, orStandard userto remove administrative rights from an account.
- ClickOkay.
- To complete this change, log in with the new administrator account.

Look for the tag 'Administrator' under your name.You should see a list of all Windows accounts on your PC. The manager wants"Administrator"under their name. If you see it under your name and email address, you are the administrator.[2]
- If you are not using an administrator account, you cannot make changes to other user accounts.
- You must know the administrator login information to change administrative responsibility on your PC.
- There is a solution to make yourself an administrator using onehidden administrator account.
- If you only have one account on your PC, that account automatically becomes an administrator. This cannot be changed until another account is added.

Make another account administrator or remove administrative rights.If you want to change the administrator on your PC, you can easily do so:
- Click on the account you want to reassign as an administrator. If you don't see the account you're looking for, you canadd itFirst.
- ClickChange account type.[3]

- "Administrator". Make sure the circle is next to itAdministratoris filled in blue. This means that you are trying to make this account an administrator on your PC.
- Or select to remove administrative rightsStandard. Make sure you have at least one administrator account before removing administrative rights from another user.

Find your name in the left sidebar.You should see the name of the current account at the top of this sidebar.

Search for "Admin" under your name.If you see "Administrator" here, you're using onecontroller account; If not, you are a shared user and cannot change the account status of other users.
- Even if you have a guest account, you should be able to see "Administrator" here under the name of the administrator account.

Create another account administrator.If you want to change the administrator or give another account administrative rights on your Mac, it's very simple:
- Click the lock icon and enter your administrator password.
- Click the info icon next to a user's name. This should be the name of a person you want to add administrative rights to.
- Select the 'Allow this user to manage this computer' checkbox next to the username. Or, if you want to remove administrative privileges from an administrator account, uncheck the box here.
- Click the lock icon again. Doing so will save your changes and apply the account type change to your selected account.

Sign in to your Chromebook owner's account.Chrome OS refers to administrators as "owners" and there can only be one at a time. Only the owner can make changes to other accounts on the device, although it is impossible to transfer ownership rights to another account.
- If you want to change the ownership of your Chromebook, you will need to do thisrestore factory settings on your Chromebook.
