How the eyes of cats and dogs work, in brief
A cat's eyes work much the same way as yours; central black pupils dilate in low light and constrict in bright surroundings. The most striking difference – cats' vertical slit pupils – evolved in nocturnal hunters to help them scan the horizon more efficiently for prey.
Cats also have a reflective membrane called a 'tapetum' over their retina that acts like a mirror and reflects light into the eye for better night vision. Cats usually arered-green color blind, but they can see something green.
You could say that a dog's eyes look even more like a human's. We basically share the same components; round pupils, a colored iris, retinas, corneas, lenses and sclera (the white of the eye). Dogs also have a tapetal membrane, but unlike cats, they also have a third eyelid in the inner corner that moves over the eye when a dog blinks to produce tears and protect against scratches.
And while the old myth that dogs only see in black and white isn't true, they are technically color blind. Dogs have dichromatic vision, which means their brains have only two color receptors. Humans have three color receptors, which allow us to see a wide spectrum of colors, from red to green to blue.

Sounds like a good description of the general nature of a cat, right?
However, this doesn't mean that your cat doesn't care who you are or can't tell you apart from other people. Instead of relying on facial recognition, cats actually identify us by the sound of our voice, our scent, and the way we physically feel about them.
The strange thing about all this is that cats actually see people as fellow cats. Some researchers believe that cats see us as big, slow, clumsy, uncoordinated cats, but others say they are not so judgmental. The great thing is that no matter if they judge our balance and agility, they still love us! When a cat kneads your chest or belly, this reflects an instinctive practice that stimulates milk production in a mother cat. In other words, when your cat bakes cookies with you, he views you as a mother figure.
Likewise, if a cat rubs you in greeting, you can see it as a sign of respect. Research suggests socats will not do this to other cats that are "inferior" to them. Most cats see us as equals.
How dogs visually perceive us
Dogs see people very differently than cats. It is believed that dogs see humans as completely different from other dogs based on their behavior because when a dog sees a human, its behavior changes quite dramatically. For example, think about how dogs play with people compared to other dogs. Dogs are likely to roll on their backs, wag their tails affectionately and hug their owners. These are all behaviors that occur in animals and that dogs generally do not easily exhibit around other dogs.
