How much water should you drink per day? Most people need about four to six cups of plain water every day. But it may be surprising to learn that water intake is an individual number.

Although the four to six cups daily rule applies to generally healthy people, this amount varies based on the amount of water they consume from other beverages and food sources. Certain health conditions, medications, activity level and environmental temperature also affect total daily water intake.

For healthy individuals, the average daily water intake is about 15.5 cups for men and about 11.5 cups for women. This may mean you only need four to six cups of plain water, depending on other fluid sources such as coffee, tea, juice, fruits and vegetables.

Other factors that can lead to more plain water include:

  • Activity level: If you lose water through sweating while you exercise, you shouldincrease your water intake. People who participate in long distances of physical activity, such as marathons, often need to compensate for both water and sodium losses.
  • Outside Temperatures: You will need to adjust your water level as the outside temperature rises. Warmer temperatures may make you thirsty more quickly.
  • General health and medications: It is possible to takeToo manywater if you have certain health problems, such as thyroid disease or kidney, liver or heart problems; or if you are taking medications that cause you to retain water, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), opiate painkillers, and some antidepressants.
  • Age: Older people are not as thirsty as when they were younger. And it can be a problem if they take medications that can cause fluid loss, such as a diuretic.

Because there is no clear answer and water intake is individual, you should consult your doctor about the right amount for you.

If you don't drink enough water every day, you run the risk of becoming dehydrated. Warning signs of dehydration include urine that is dark yellow in color, weakness, low blood pressure,dizzinessor confusion.

Fluids to keep you hydrated

Water isn't your only choice when it comes to hydration. All drinks containing water contribute to your daily needs. And some people even tout its benefitsmilkfor hydration.

And it's a myth that caffeinated drinks or drinks containing alcohol are dehydrating because they make you pee. That's true, but during the day the water from these drinks still makes a net positive contribution to total fluid consumption.
