How do farmers do this using silos?
Silos work in a number of ways. In a real silo, the feed material (grass silage, cutlet, etc.) is packed very tightly in the silo. The product is then preserved with an inoculant that deprives the silo of oxygen. Since there is no oxygen, anaerobic bacteria begin to grow and push the pH of the product in the silo to a level that prevents mold from forming. Because silos do not contain oxygen, farmers know that they are very dangerous and should only be used or maintained by a professional.
Fans to keep moisture out
Farmers also use a lot of grain bins, which also look like silos. In this case, the grain (e.g. corn) is left to dry in the field. When the grain reaches a certain moisture level, usually less than 18%, it is harvested with a combine and then stored in bins. These containers usually have large fans that push air through the crop, so that it remains very dry. Because the grain contains no moisture, mold growth is greatly reduced.
Keep the food off the ground
To control rodents, keep it in a safe place. For example, I store my feed on a wooden pallet in a completely enclosed workshop. I watch for signs of rodents and if I notice any activity I set traps to capture and remove them. The feed that I actively use is stored in METAL buckets in my stable. I emphasized metal because mice can easily chew through bags, plastic bags, or wooden barrels. If you notice signs of mice near your shed or garden, set traps.
