Grasshopper
Grass measuring and management system
Simple grass measurement with automatic upload
Grasshopper is the most accurate grass cover measuring system currently available on the market. The Grasshopper algorithm was developed and validated over a three-year period by True North Technologies and at the Moorepark Grassland Research Station in Ireland.
Grasshopper is very easy to use. Grasshopper works on the principle of measuring the compressed grass height to the nearest millimeter. When measuring, you have complete control over when the measurement is taken, eliminating angle drop issues experienced with other methods.
When your pasture is ready, Grasshopper automatically uploads all your data to GrasslandTools and from there to third party databases such as PastureBase Ireland, AgriNet and others.

Functions
how the grasshopper works
Mapping the farm
An accurate farm map is the first decision support tool a farm needs. Critical to determining the amount of grass on a farm is that you need to know the productive area of the farm, that is, the area where grass can grow. Grasshopper has a mapping feature that allows you to accurately map your entire farm and up to four additional farms or blocks via GPS. Paddock layouts can be changed and re-mapped at any time with Grasshopper.
Allocation of grass
Accurate covers and correct installation of fencing in the paddock are required from time to time. Enter the number of animals and their daily grass allocation using the allocation function in the Grasshopper app. Based on the current paddock cover, the app shows where you should place the strip fencing. Grasshopper indicates exactly where to start and stop your strip fencing.
Live
Real-time information about the paddock and the entire grazing platform is essential for your rotation planning, as this can vary throughout the season depending on the productivity of the paddock. Your grazing platform is visible on the phone in the form of a 'wedge', so you always have immediate information. Wedge information can be shared in real time with a number of colleagues. For example, decision-making can be shared with remote advisors.
Compliance with Exemptions
Farmers are required to carry out 20 pasture measurements annually and upload the data to Pasture Base Ireland from February 2020. Grasshopper makes complying with these new regulations easy. Compliance requires collecting accurate grass data and automatically uploading it to GrasslandTools or PBI. A major benefit of your GrasslandTools account is the ability to print variance reports.

What our customers think
"Being 56 years old and generally tech savvy, I find the Grasshopper very easy to use and the confidence it has given me to make lawn care decisions much earlier than I used to. I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to improve the decision about making grass."
Andrew Flavin - dairy farmerCo. Kerry
"Locusts give me good grass utilization, a lot of confidence in the grazing rotation with increased protein percentages in cows that are constantly in the right cover"
Ger Walsh - dairy farmerCo. Limerick
"The grasshopper gives me the opportunity to stay on top of grazing management all year round. Because we are a drying company and burn out quickly, I think the Grasshopper system is great if I see the shortage (grass position) coming 2 weeks earlier than we would normally do. "
Alan Grace - dairy farmerWhat. Athlone
"Grassland Tools is a great help for every farmer. It immediately gives you your average farm coverage per cow, the farm card is color coded and gives you a good overview of your farm"
Frank Crinion - dairy farmerCo. Meath
We have been using the system (Grasshopper) religiously for 4 years now and without it I would be completely lost by now. I often wonder how I managed it before I got it and started measuring grass.
Kieran Walsh - dairy farmerCo. Wexford
“We used mowing and weighing many years ago to measure the grass but found it slow so we eventually gave up until we came across the grasshopper during the plowing competition in 2018. It is now 2021 and it is part of the every week weekly routine. The speed and ability for everyone in the family to go outside and measure grass is a great advantage for us, because labor is very scarce during the week. It is a job that my wife and daughter like to do on weekends ."
John Keane - dairy farmerCo. Carlow
