This year's big Minecraft update, the Wild Update, introduced a number of new mobs and mechanics. But the cutest of them all is definitely Allay, a small ghostly creature who will try to retrieve everything you tell him.

Here's what Allay does, how to find one, and how to make more.

How to use an Allay in Minecraft

In essence, Allay is a bit like a walking metal detector. Once you give him an item (by right-clicking or pressing the left trigger), he will start following you and looking for more copies of that item. It then collects any matching items it finds and delivers them directly to you.

As long as you stay within 64 blocks of Allay, it will follow you everywhere (except underwater). And as follows, it will search and find items within 32 blocks of you. If a nearby node block is activated, it will also circle around the node block for 30 seconds instead.

There are a few situations where having an Allay can be extremely useful. If you have created a mob farmFor example, you can use an Allay to passively collect only the loot you want, but leave the rest behind. If you used TNT to clear an entire cave in one go, your Allay can clear out the materials left behind. And of course, if you accidentally drop an item somewhere, using an Allay is an easy way to find it.

Please note that your Allay can only collect dropped items - in other words, it can only collect items if it is just a small icon floating above the ground. This means that if you give your Allay a diamond, he will no longer be able to find diamonds that you have not yet mined.

How do you find an Allay in Minecraft?

Unlike most mobs, Allays only spawn in two specific locations: Pillager Outposts and Forest Mansions.

Pillager outposts are tall buildings filled with crossbow-wielding warriors that can spawn in most biomes. Occasionally you'll find looting outposts surrounded by wooden prison cells. These cells contain an Iron Golem or two Allays.

Forest mansions are rarer and you can only find them in dark forests. Some mansions have prison cells, usually locked and guarded by a revenant. Although most of the cells will be empty, there is always a chance that you will find one to three Allay locked in them.

Once you find some captured Allays, break the bars of the prison cells to free them. The only way to get Allays to follow you afterward is to give them an item to look for, so give them an item and lead them to safety.

How to breed Allays in Minecraft

Allays don't breed quite like other creatures in Minecraft. To duplicate your Allay, you will need a Jukebox, a Music Disk, and an Amethyst Shard.

To make a jukebox, combine a diamond with eight shelves of any type. You also need to place a music disk in it, which you can find in treasure chests around the world, or by tricking a skeleton into killing a creeper.

You can find amethyst shards underground by mining amethyst clusters that grow as part of larger amethyst geodes.

Once you have everything you need, take your Allay to the jukebox and play the music disc. Allay starts dancing. Give your Amethyst Shard to Allay and another one will appear.

Then wait at least five minutes for the original Allay or the new one to be reduplicated.
