On a Mac withCall siliconor an Intel-based Mac with the Apple T2 Security Chip, use Erase Assistant to reset your Mac to factory settings before trading in or selling it. You can also use the Erase Assistant to erase your Mac before reinstalling macOS. Erase Assistant will delete your content and settings and any apps you have installed. To open the Erase Assistant, click the Erase All Contents and Settings buttonTransfer or reset settings.
WARNING:Erasing your Mac will delete all information from it. Before you start,backup your Mac with Time Machine.
What does the Erase Assistant do?
Erase Assistant does the following on your Mac:
Sign out of Apple services, such as iCloud.
Disables Find My and Activation Lock so that the Mac you delete is no longer associated with you.
Deletes your content and settings and any apps you have installed.
Deletes all volumes (not just the volume you are on). If you installed Windows on your Mac using Boot Camp Assistant, the BOOTCAMP volume will also be deleted.
Deletes all user accounts and their data (not just your own user account).
Erase your Mac
Select the Apple menu> System Preferences, then click Generalin the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.)
On the right, click Transfer or Reset, and then click Clear All Content and Settings.
In Erase Assistant, enter your administrative credentials and click Unlock.
View items that will be deleted in addition to your content and settings.
If your Mac has multiple user accounts, click the arrow next to your account name to view the topics.
Click Continue and follow the on-screen instructions.
Remark:If your version of macOS has changed, Erase Assistant won't be able to erase your Mac and will display a warning telling you to reinstall macOS first.Reinstall macOSand then use Erase Assistant.
