iPHONE 6 GAINS SHARE OF SAMSUNG'S HOME MARKET
Apple is about to challenge Samsung Electronics' position on its home turf in South Korea - thanks to the new iPhone 6 series.
Apple captured a record 33 percent market share in South Korea in November, the highest ever for a foreign brand, according to a monthly report released Wednesday by Hong Kong-based market research firm Counterpoint.
In contrast, Samsung's share fell to 46 percent, after hovering around 60 percent for five months.
Apple's progress in South Korea is significant, as November was the first full month in which the larger-screen iPhone 6 and 6 Plus were sold in the country.
Other studies have shown similar results. For example, Ladbrokes challenged a thousand smartphone users to take a series of online brainteasers designed to test their mental agility.
iPhone users turned out to have the fastest common sense of all; they completed the test in an average of 94 seconds, while BlackBerry users were the slowest at 118 seconds.
In second place were Google Nexus owners, who completed the test on average just five seconds slower than top-ranked Apple.
Although the fastest test of all was taken by a Samsung owner, the group as a whole was in third place at just 47 seconds with an average completion time of 103 seconds.
HTC owners came fourth with an average time of 105 seconds, while those with Nokia phones scored 109 seconds.
A 2013 study found that iPhone owners are vain and spend more on clothing and grooming than people with BlackBerrys and Android phones.
BlackBerry owners earn the most and are more likely to have long-term relationships, while those with Android phones have the best manners and are handy in the kitchen.
The study, commissioned by TalkTalk Mobile, surveyed 2,000 owners of the three major smartphone brands to determine whether their choice of device was an extension of their personality.
Overall, Google's Android sales are higher than Apple's, but the iPhone is the most popular smartphone in the US.
More than 42 percent of smartphones are iPhones. According to Comscore, Samsung is the second most popular phone in the US market.
