Chicken math explained (2024)

What is chicken math?

Chicken math is how backyard keepers count their chickens, with the numbers increasing year after year with each new hatch and addition to the flock. So the chicken keeper who starts with 5 chickens in the garden and then adds a few colored egg layers and then some ducks and guinea fowl.

Chicken mathematics is the strange and incomprehensible process by which a flock of five chickens in the backwater grows to 35 chickens in three years.

Chicken math stretches the meaning of “a few” to its limits. It's just a couple of girls, honey.

Poultry math can also be applied to chicken farms and hatcheries. This involves a single coop mysteriously turning into two, or the magical appearance of another incubator.

I'm pretty sure every long-suffering chicken coop partner has heard something like:

"Honey, I couldn't leave the last two cubs Mrs. had, they looked so lonely"

Of

"More chicks hatched than I thought"

The rules for math with chicken:

Every goalkeeper has a slightly different approach, but these are general rules to get you started.

  • Bantams only count as 1/3 of a whole chicken.
  • Hatching eggs are not included.
  • Chickens do not count towards the total.
  • Older hens are only counted for three quarters because they do not lay as many eggs.
  • It doesn't matter how many taps you have, they count as 1.
  • Hens that do not lay do not count towards the total.
  • Other breeds are not added to the total, duck math is a completely different story.

The phenomena arising from the addictive nature ofbreeding chickens. This particular way of doing poultry math means that a chicken farmer will continually expand the flock and always end up with more chickens than expected, even taking into accountChicken math..

Example: As abackyard chickenThe flock starts with four chickens for the sole purpose of laying eggs, then adds a few colorful egg layers, along with a few ornamental breeds. Once pre-orders for some of the most sought-after chickens begin, a few dwarf breeds will be added to the flock, the farm will expand and so there will be room for a few more. The total calculation for chicken at that point is about six chickens.

I thought I would stop at six o'clockChickensbut I ordered six more and IextendedminCooperation, because Chicken Math tells me I'll get a few dozen out of them. (or 50.)
