Apple's Keyboard Replacement Program - Don't delay! — Visionary computer (2024)

/ David Mafucci

Many MacBook, MacBook Air and MacBook Pro computers are eligible for a free repair if you don't wait too long...

Starting with the new MacBook in 2015, Apple launched an all-new "butterfly" keyboard mechanism, which quickly became the standard on all their laptop models (except the old MacBook Air from 2015 and 2017, which still used the MagSafe charger). Unfortunately, the first incarnation of this butterfly keyboard mechanism was a little less durable than expected. Many customers around the world have reported problems such as repetitive keys, not registering, or feeling like the keys are "sticky" or unresponsive. Fortunately, if you have one of the affected models and are experiencing less than ideal performance, we can replace the top case for free thanks to aApple's Quality Program. The program applies to eligible MacBook, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro models for four years after the device's initial sale. 4 years will pass quickly, so don't wait too long! Take your Mac in for maintenance as soon as possible.

Eligible Models

To identify your computer model and see if it is eligible for this program, choose Apple menu () > About This Mac. Eligible models are listed below.

  • MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, begin 2015)

  • MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, begin 2016)

  • MacBook (Retina, 12-tommer, 2017)

  • MacBook Air (Retina, 13-tommer, 2018)

  • MacBook Air (Retina, 13-tommer, 2019)

  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016, two Thunderbolt 3 ports)

  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, two Thunderbolt 3 ports)

  • MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2018)

  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2019, four Thunderbolt 3 ports)

  • MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2019)

Recently we've seen a number of Macs that demonstrate the issues that Apple's Quality Program addresses, but are simply outdated and ineligible for the free repair. A private estimate for a new top case ranges from $399 to $599, so it's definitely a good idea to get it for $0 while you qualify. Please note that both the 13" and 15" MacBook Pros will also receive new batteries as these are part of the upper case. This is an added benefit and makes your computer even more valuable because it gets a brand new battery!

The repair process is pretty standard: drop off your Mac for diagnosis at your convenience. Apple ships parts overnight, so repairs are typically completed the next business day. We need the computer to stay with us during the repair. Turnaround time varies slightly depending on how busy we are with other work, but this is a slower time of year so we should be able to focus on these repairs. If you wish, we will be happy to communicate with you about our current repair queue and expected turnaround time. Call ore-mailwith any questions.

One more thing: we cannot emphasize enough how important it is that all customers have a full Time Machineback-up. Always backup your Mac before doing thateveryoneservice performed. If you don't have a backup, we'll be happy to prepare one for you before we start servicing your Mac.
