If you have never worn braces before, you will need to make many small lifestyle adjustments. But one thing you don't have to give up is romance. Many people with braces worry that they won't be able to kiss someone else until the brace is removed. Others worry that it will be an unpleasant experience, both for themselves and their partner.
Never be afraid. Kissing with braces is not only possible, it can be just as enjoyable for both of you as without braces.
Take it easy at first. It takes time to get used to a new brace. You will have to learn to eat and brush your teeth. It may even take time to get used to talking with your braces. Wait until you feel comfortable with your brace before trying something adventurous, like a kiss. We recommend waiting at least two weeks before trying to kiss.
When you kiss, take it slow. Being gentle is important, both for the safety of your braces and that of your partner. You may want to start kissing with your lips closed. Be careful. You don't want to cut or catch your partner, and you don't want to bump your teeth. Make sure you and your partner keep your tongue away from your braces. Just like the lips, the tongue can get cut or pinched by your braces and this will definitely ruin the moment.
Dental wax can make your braces more comfortable and kissing more fun. In fact, your partner may not even notice your braces if you use dental wax correctly. The rough areas that your partner might snag or cut can be covered, protecting them and making the kiss more comfortable.
Finally, we recommend that you keep your teeth clean and your breath fresh. This doesn't just apply to people who wear braces, and certainly not just to people who kiss others. Wearing braces can make it more difficult to maintain good oral health, so make sure you put in the time and effort to stay healthy and make your mouth inviting to others.
Wearing braces does not make you unattractive and certainly does not prevent you from showing affection with a classic romantic kiss. Don't forget to relax. Your partner loves you and your braces don't change that. It just takes some time and practice to become as good a kisser with braces as you would be without them.
